Holistic Dentistry news

The greatest focus of homeopathic, mercury free, or holistic dentistry is the removal of toxic silver / amalgam fillings.

Since amalgam contains toxic chemicals such as mercury, numerous dentists from all over the world have criticized its usage in dental care. However, there is not a clear fact that can suggest the health risks involved in using amalgam fillings for various dental treatments, even in the correct amounts. While Patterson considers this amount to be 27 micrograms per day, the FDA estimates it between 1-3 micrograms. Controversy also surrounds the effects of that amount of exposure. However, numerous countries have already approved dental fillings that include mercury. This compound was banned by Sweden, Denmark and Norway due to some environmental issues and its effects on human health. The same reasons have pushed other countries to create some strict disposal protocols for unused dental amalgam after a certain treatment. This should give any dentist pause, more so a conscientious mercury free dentist.

This compound is considered affordable, durable and easy to use by dentists who sustain its usage. They also suggest the fact that dental porcelain is really expensive and that resin composites last only as half as long as the dental amalgam. Considering the fact that numerous questions that are now surrounding the endocrine disrupting effects of plastic chemicals used in composite resins, we can say that the gap between these materials and amalgam is gradually decreasing. Therefore, we can say that dental amalgam is safer than the composite resins since these materials present more credible proofs of possible toxic effects.

Water contamination and environmental damage of mercury are other negative aspects that surround the usage of dental amalgam fillings, apart from the health and ethics problems. Dentists from various countries all over the world are using this compound unregulated, and this is another major issue. Nearly 50% of total mercury emissions in the UK come from amalgam and laboratory devices, according to WHO. Numerous states in the US, where dental amalgams contribute 1/3 of the mercury waste, don`t impose the use of separators to decrease the release of mercury into the public sewer system.

In a recent poll created and published by Zogby International, nearly 90% of respondents stated that they would prefer to be informed about mercury in dental amalgam before following a particular treatment and nearly 70% of respondents were not aware of the presence of mercury in dental amalgam. Moreover, half of the American population believed that dental amalgam fillings that contain mercury have led to some serious health issues, according to a study conducted by FDA in 1993. Each patient should know that amalgam contains mercury before receiving it as a filling, according to some professional dentists.

When a popular CBS news program covered the use of mercury in amalgam, the general public has discovered the huge lack of knowledge related to this particular compound. Numerous researches regarding the mercury release from amalgam have been conducted since then. The content of the broadcast received numerous critics from an article published in Consumer Reports. The article suggested that the content has misinformed the general audience and that the ADA spokesperson assigned to this program was not able to defend the claims properly.

The fact that mercury from dental amalgam can cause nephrotoxicity, neurobehavioural changes, autoimmunity, oxidative stress, autism, skin and mucosa modifications or non-specific symptoms and complaints was suggested by a review published by the Freiburg University Institute for Environmental Medicine in 2005. Moreover, the same review stated that a low-dose mercury exposure can trigger Alzheimer`s disease or multiple sclerosis and that a wide number of patients have shown permanent improvement of various chronic complaints after removing the dental amalgam implant.

Make Your Own Toothpaste (The Best Homemade Recipes)

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon sea salt (finely ground)

1 drop essential oil (ex. peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon, etc)

  • Mix all ingredients with a little bit of water to create a paste.
  • The peppermint essential oil adds minty-ness to the toothpaste. You may use other essential oils to add flavor to this rather salty mix.

————————————-

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon finely ground sea salt

1 drop of pure citrus, orange or clove essential oil

A few drops of water

  • Mix thoroughly all the ingredients together in a small bowl until a thick paste forms. Add some to your tooth brush. Brush as usual.

————————————-

1/4 cup baking soda

2 teaspoons fine sea salt

2 Tbsp. rind of dried orange or lemon

  • Grind the dried orange or lemon rinds to a very fine powder. Mix in baking soda and fine sea salt. Store as is (as a dry mix). To use, simply add a small amount onto a wet toothbrush.
  • The orange/lemon rind balances the saltiness of the salt and baking soda and also adds a faint but pleasant taste.

————————————-

6 teaspoons baking soda

1/4 teaspoon 3% hydrogen peroxide

10 drops pure peppermint, citrus or clove essential oil

2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil (warm or about 76+ degrees Fahrenheit – so it is fluid enough)

  • Place baking soda in a small bowl. Add the liquid ingredients and mix till you achieve just the right paste consistency. Try it and taste it and add more essential oil if you want more flavor. You may add more baking soda if it’s a bit runny or add more coconut oil if the texture is too dry. Store in any opaque container (to protect the hydrogen peroxide from degrading).

————————————-

3 Tbsp. baking soda

2 teaspoons glycerin

3 Tbsp. warm coconut oil

20 drops peppermint essential oil or cinnamon oil

A few drops of liquid stevia or 1 packet of xylitol

  • Thoroughly mix all of the ingredients together.
  • Stevia or xylitol naturally adds some sweetness, and xylitol also helps fight tooth decay.

Optimum Oral Health is within Your Reach: Holistic Dentistry

Oral and dental health is crucial for the overall health of the body. The oral cavity is often the first point for many microbial infections to enter the body. Both past and ongoing researches identify a connection between gum infections and diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and even stroke. Poor oral health is also known to contribute to depression and other mental health conditions.

These potentially harmful consequences are often taken lightly because conventional dentistry focuses on teeth and gums neglecting the rest of the body. Every dentist knows and understands the link between oral health and the overall health of the body. Unfortunately, some of them are not well trained to address the long-term effects of a compromised oral health. That is where the biocompatible dental option comes in.

What makes holistic dentistry better than conventional dentistry?

Holistic dentistry looks at the overall health, not just the teeth and gums. It assesses your lifestyle, your diet, your exercise routines and how you deal with stress.Practitioners of holistic dentistry believe that infections of the teeth and gums can easily spread bacteria, viruses and toxins to the entire system through the bloodstream. These bacterias and viruses can depress the immune system leading to diseases. Contrary to this view, conventional dentistry neglects these connections and treats only the symptoms of the overall problems. The common assumption is that once an oral problem is corrected, then there is no need for further concerns.

In a bid to ensure that infections do not spread throughout the body, holistic dentists devote their attention to eliminating toxic dental materials from areas where they often go unnoticed. They utilize both natural and conventional therapies to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases of the oral cavity. Furthermore, most holistic dentists take the initiative of advising and providing programs on preventive care that surpasses practicing good oral hygiene.

Many conventional treatments for oral conditions utilize elements that are toxic and have adverse effects on the body. Amalgam, for instance, is commonly used in fillings, yet it contains more than 50% mercury, a heavy metal that can damage the immune and central nervous systems. In addition to this, common dental procedures such as root canals and gum cleanings can force bacteria into the bloodstream, which may be harmful to some patients. A majority of holistic dentists are against performing procedures like root canals. They emphasize that the use of chemicals in sterilizing agents and the root canal procedure which results to bacteria becoming trapped in the canal can cause long-term health effects.

For these reasons, holistic dentists often use natural antibacterial agents to minimize the risks of an infection while performing gum cleanings or any other dental procedures. Rather than using amalgam, or other metals to fill cavities, holistic dentists opt for more benign substances, like composite resin, gold or plastic for fillings and crowns. They encourage patients to remove existing amalgam fillings and replace them with healthier materials.

One outstanding benefit of holistic dentistry is that you can save more time and money, and still get optimum treatment. Unlike traditional dentistry, holistic dentistry takes a look at not only your teeth and gums but your overall health as well. It holds the notion that keeping the body healthy is imperative if you want to keep the teeth healthy. When you have an unhealthy body, keeping the teeth healthy can be a painstaking task. With holistic dentistry, not only will you save more money on dental treatments, but you will also feel healthier holistically.
